New Column: Real Draw for Real Presence

I’m over at Faith & Family LIVE! today trying to explain why I’m Catholic. Or perhaps more to the point, why I bother to go to Mass when it’s not always easy to pay much attention to know where I even am with three little ones clinging to me. Here’s the Cliff’s Notes answer: ItRead the whole post >>

Keeping Faith (in my Children)

Preschooler: Church is so quiet and peaceful. There are no worries.A brief pause… Preschooler: But sometimes it’s a little boring. Honesty is a virtue, right? In all seriousness, how should I respond to my little one’s honesty? (Advice is welcome!) I don’t want to force feed her faith to the point that it becomes aRead the whole post >>

Harden Not My Heart

To the gentleman at daily Mass who repeatedly shoots disapproving glances our way, even when my children are behaving (almost) as piously as saints, please pray for me. I want to be at the table of the Lord as much as you do, but it’s not always easy for me to be there. You mayRead the whole post >>

Fireworks

I’ve had my share of fireworks this past week. Oh, I’m not talking about the WHAM-BAM, sparkly kind. Deep Thoughts, Big Words

Madeline, out of the blue: Mommy, what’s the Eucharist? Oh, boy and I thought explaining what jails were recently and what an emergency was the other day was tough. Me: Okay, let me think how to explain. It’s about giving thanks to Jesus. You know when I go up for Communion and you get blessed?Read the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
