Tarzan Knows How to Treat His Woman

Does anyone else find this illustration and its caption (He took his woman in his arms.) as hilarious as my husband and I do? We were flipping through a collection of his old books from childhood and came across it in Tarzan of the Apes. Hope someone takes you in your arms today. Happy Valentine’sRead the whole post >>

Books Read in 2010

Happy New Year! I’m still working on ferret out the perfect word to embrace in 2011. I’ve particularly enjoyed these words/posts from others this year: mindful, enough, harmony, and Eucharisteo. Everybody seems to have their act together more than I do. Ah, but I’m not supposed to be comparing. No word yet, but I doRead the whole post >>

Argh! Pirate Birthday Party Fun

Last weekend we celebrated Madeline’s sixth birthday with friends and family. Sometime last year she became obsessed with pirates and the idea of searching for lost treasure. So it came as no big surprise when she requested a pirate-themed birthday bash. She had only two requests for the party: 1. That we have a treasureRead the whole post >>

100 (Very Random) Things

Because I’ve been swamped with house stuff and have had little time to write anything cerebral or anything at all, I’m sharing 100 random things about me. Oh, to be Two Again!

We’ve started something new in our home. Each morning we begin with a prayer and a discussion focused on a virtue. Since it’s a new habit and because I often wake up feeling about as alert and spry as a slug, Madeline often reminds me that we need to do our prayer thingy. This morningRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
