Book Review: Saints at the Dinner Table

I never expected to transform into a total foodie, but somehow it happened. My mom was an amazing housewife, but she’d be the first to admit that she was no Rachael Ray. Once when my younger brother returned home from college, he told her how much he’d missed her homecooking. “Well, what do you wantRead the whole post >>

Book Review: The Baby Fat Diet

I recently received a review copy of The Baby Fat Diet, and I admit I was reluctant to start reading a book that might put unnecessary pressure on new moms to return to their pre-pregnancy weight. I’m not a big fan of dieting books (or even the word diet) in general because too many ofRead the whole post >>

Ecological Breastfeeding Book Review

Over this past summer, I had the amazing privilege of personally corresponding with Sheila Kippley, a renowned breastfeeding and natural family planning advocate and co-founder of NFP International. A few months back she sent me The Seven Standards of Ecological Breastfeeding: The Frequency Factor, her latest book to hit the shelves, and it’s about timeRead the whole post >>

Book Review: My Cousin the Saint

“If faith can make you feel a part of something bigger than yourself, so, too can an Italian family bearing the love of the ages.” This line from My Cousin the Saint: A Search for Faith, Family, and Miracles by Justin Catanoso (HarperCollins Publishers) pretty much sums up the central theme of this riveting memoirRead the whole post >>

Catholic Reluctantly: Book Review (And Some Preggo Brain Ramblings About the Teen Years)

During my recent three-day trip to the beach, I devoured three books, including Catholic Reluctantly by Christian M. Frank. I received a review copy courtesy of The Catholic Company’s reviewer program. The book is the first installment in the much anticipated John Paul 2 teen fiction series, and it was a quick, enjoyable read. AlthoughRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.

“She could never be a saint, but she thought she could be a martyr if they killed her quick.”

―Flannery O'Connor
