The View From Up Here

This week, my two older daughters had the opportunity to attend a homeschooling nature study program. While they were digging for worms in a compost pile and learning about various ecosystems, I took advantage of the sunshine and went on a hike with Mary Elizabeth. I stuffed her in my Ergo. It had been aRead the whole post >>

Sledding in the South…

…calls for improvisation. Meanwhile, Mary Elizabeth is still eating snow… Okay, I know my friends from the North are probably thinking, “Enough with the snow day pictures already. What’s the big deal?” Well, imagine you had three whole days of balmy weather warm enough for you strip down to a light sundress. Pretty crazy, huh?Read the whole post >>

Mission Accomplished: Snowman, Crockpot Applesauce, & Hot Cocoa

The snow was too soft and fresh yesterday to build anything, but today it was perfect. We’ve never been able to create a snowman this big here in Georgia. Usually they are pitiful things that look more like the one pictured in this past post, so we’re very proud. As Daddy and the big girlsRead the whole post >>

Further Proof of Global Warming

It was amazing to have a white Christmas this year, but that was just the beginning. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
