Babies Don’t Keep

Today Madeline was coloring when out of the blue she said, “Oh my gosh! I’m getting so big.” It’s true. I sometimes can’t believe how old she suddenly seems. She’s become quite the conversationalist and she’s started dressing herself (or at least attempting to), and she’s morphed into a little mother, who runs to herRead the whole post >>

"’Day’ Look Kinda Blue to Me"

We’re still trying to guess what color Rachel Marie’s eyes will be. Right now they’re a muddy palette of earth tones with a few glints of blue, so I’m leaning toward having another brown-eyed girl. (Dave has caramel-brown eyes; I have greenish-blue eyes with a circle of yellow around the pupils. Dave has said myRead the whole post >>

Decisions, Decisions

Hmmmm… Do I want something simple but classic like a decadent chocolate truffle or am I in the mood for something a bit more exotic like creamy Devil’s Food Cake pudding? I’ve never had a peanut butter cup before and Daddy speaks very highly of them. A Reese’s PB cup it is! This looks absolutelyRead the whole post >>

Pain in the Neck

Believe it or not, this is one of Rachel Marie’s favorite sleeping positions. We can only assume stretching her neck back at this awkward angle somehow helps alleviate some of her reflux. She also prefers to be held upright, so now I just have to learn how to sleep standing up while holding her inRead the whole post >>

Happy Baptismal Day, Rachel Marie!

This past Sunday we welcomed Rachel Marie into the Catholic Church. The presiding priest gave a beautiful, personalized ceremony. The guest of honor slept through most of the baptism. We’ve been joking around that she was going to love getting baptized because she completely relaxes when we allow her neck to stretch back and herRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
