Little Mother

I caught Madeline “nursing” for the first time. After she finished feeding her baby I watched her change her diaper. “Big poopy!” she exclaimed. She proceeded to wipe her baby girl (front to back, of course) and then asked me for a clean diaper. Watching her imitate me was both fun and humbling. It madeRead the whole post >>

Rachel Marie Wicker is Here!

On Wednesday, June 6 we welcomed Rachel Marie into the world. Thanks to God, my wonderful husband/coach and amazing certified nurse midwife, I was able to have another natural childbirth. I only pushed for 10 minutes (hate me now!). Rachel weighed 6 pounds 3 ounces and was 19 inches long. We came home today andRead the whole post >>

Bedtime Story

No, this little tale doesn’t involve me waking up in a pool of water to discover my water has broken and then racing to the hospital to deliver a healthy baby. I’m still pregnant, still having contractions, still dilating (can’t still be effacing since I reached the 100 percent mark last week), just not inRead the whole post >>

Cause of Our Joy

I like to think that Mary has a good sense of humor. She was a mother, after all, and I’ve learned laughter is an essential part of raising children. Sometimes a good joke or a silly act can go a long way in keeping peace, getting your kids to cooperate or diffusing potential tantrums. LikeRead the whole post >>

Happy Mother’s Day!

I had a lovely Mother’s Day weekend and I hope all you other moms out there did as well. On Saturday, we hosted a Mother’s Day brunch for both grandmothers. Madeline made watering can cards (out of cardstock) and tucked seed packets in a slit I created with a sharp knife. We then wrote “SowingRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
