Bedtime Prayer

Madeline offered up the following prayer this evening after we said a Hail Mary together as a family: “Tank” you God for Mommy, Daddy, Baby Rae, and for helping Ivy speak. In the name of the “Fater,” Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Note: Ivy is my parents’ yellow Lab who has just learned the niftyRead the whole post >>

Fare Thee Well, Feezy

Madeline had an imaginary friend. Notice I’m using past tense. Feezy, a playmate who first stopped by our house a few weeks ago, lived a happy but short life. It seems like only yesterday when Madeline was carrying on an elaborate conversation with someone in my bedroom as I brushed my teeth. “Who are youRead the whole post >>

Is Your Yard More than Half Covered in Snow?

Mine is, at least in the optimistic and hopeful eyes of Madeline. We woke up this morning and threw the curtains aside to check the weather after experiencing a rare Georgia snowfall yesterday. I peered out at the patchy grass that looked more like a swamp where a few ice cubes were melting away thanRead the whole post >>

An Answered Prayer

This morning, very early long before the sun peeked through the window blinds, I woke up to Madeline’s announcement, “I have pee dripping down my leg.” Not exactly an alarm clock, but hearing these words has the same effect. I stumbled out of bed and dug in Madeline’s drawer for a pair of panties. ThenRead the whole post >>

Show Business

Gaba and Papa (my parents) took Madeline and me to see Annie at the Fox Theatre yesterday. Leading up to the big event, Madeline was frequently “forming” (translation: performing) for a captive audience (Dave, Rachel Marie and me) on her “big stage” (a not-so-big patch of open carpet in our living room). Just before weRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
