Strength for the Journey

I woke up this morning and did not feel like going to Mass. Madeline had a sleepover at Nana and Pop’s (Dave’s parents) and Dave was on-call last night, so it was very tempting to just skip out of going. I decided I’d go to the earlier service to “get it over with.” As soonRead the whole post >>

"’Day’ Look Kinda Blue to Me"

We’re still trying to guess what color Rachel Marie’s eyes will be. Right now they’re a muddy palette of earth tones with a few glints of blue, so I’m leaning toward having another brown-eyed girl. (Dave has caramel-brown eyes; I have greenish-blue eyes with a circle of yellow around the pupils. Dave has said myRead the whole post >>

She Sleeps!

Rachel Marie is a sleeper – at least compared to her big sister. Tonight I nursed her and she drifted off while I was still trying to get Madeline to take a trip to the Land of Nod. (Rae is on meds for reflux now and they seem to be helping a bit, although theyRead the whole post >>

You Know It’s Time to Shave Your Legs When…

Her pallet beside our bed has lost some of its appeal, especially since she sees the rest of her family all cozy together. Rae sleeps in a co-sleeper, but she’s right beside Mommy.) When IRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
