Child of God

A child’s reverence and level of understanding never cease to amaze me. Take Tuesday night when Madeline ran into Dave and my bedroom with tear-stained cheeks and told me, “God is watching over me, Mommy.” She started to run back to her own bedroom where Daddy was sitting outside the door helping our fearful, fight-sleepingRead the whole post >>

Decisions, Decisions

Hmmmm… Do I want something simple but classic like a decadent chocolate truffle or am I in the mood for something a bit more exotic like creamy Devil’s Food Cake pudding? I’ve never had a peanut butter cup before and Daddy speaks very highly of them. A Reese’s PB cup it is! This looks absolutelyRead the whole post >>

Road Rage

I’ll tell you what gives me road rage. Imagine having a hot dinner date with your hubby – the first in a long, long time – and being stuck in Atlanta rush hour traffic on a Friday with a baby wailing in her car seat. Then imagine trying to politely maneuver your car over aRead the whole post >>

Pain in the Neck

Believe it or not, this is one of Rachel Marie’s favorite sleeping positions. We can only assume stretching her neck back at this awkward angle somehow helps alleviate some of her reflux. Fear Factor

Last night Madeline clung to her daddy begging him not to leave her side at bedtime. “Scared,” out little Klingon told him. “What are you scared of?” we both asked. “The bumblebee. See it?” She pointed to the ceiling where the imaginary creepy-crawly must have been buzzing around. I responded by swatting the menacing insectRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
