Just Say No

After a long day of dealing with a tenacious antagonist, I asked Madeline if she was going through her 2-year-old negativism developmental phase. To which she replied, “No way!” I think I got my answer.

Little Mother

I caught Madeline “nursing” for the first time. After she finished feeding her baby I watched her change her diaper. “Big poopy!” she exclaimed. She proceeded to wipe her baby girl (front to back, of course) and then asked me for a clean diaper. Watching her imitate me was both fun and humbling. It madeRead the whole post >>

Who’s the Boss?

Madeline was saying, “NO!” and “NOW!” the other morning. My patience was short-fused after getting a total of about eight hours of sleep over the past two days. I was trying to keep my cool, but I finally told this tiny tyrant that “Mommy’s the boss” and this simple fact means she cannot (and willRead the whole post >>

A Mommy in the Making

This morning I was nursing Rachel Marie and Madeline looked at us wistfully and said, “Mommy, when I older and bigger, carry baby sister downstairs and nurse her because when I older and bigger, I make booby milk.”

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
