For Crying Out Loud

I’m probably cursing myself, but I am still waiting to hear Rachel Marie really lose it. I’m not talking about a brief “waaa-waaa” or her usual grunts and baby squawks. I’m talking newborn wails – the kind I remember hearing at least occasionally with Madeline. Our firstborn wasn’t a big crier either. She was bornRead the whole post >>

Jesus is Everywhere

My aunt and uncle sent Madeline a Mary doll along with a gift for Rachel Marie. In a note to Madeline, my aunt wrote, “Play with this doll when your mom is busy with the baby. Mary can be your mother, too.” Madeline looked the doll over and asked, “Where’s Jesus?” “I don’t know. ThisRead the whole post >>

Happily Ever After

Yesterday when Dave got home from work, Madeline told him he was the prince. Then she looked at me and said I was Cinderella. I’m not a big fan of the whole princess craze, but Madeline has seen Cinderella and has some Disney figurines she loves to give baths when she’s marinating in a frothyRead the whole post >>

Rachel Marie Wicker is Here!

On Wednesday, June 6 we welcomed Rachel Marie into the world. Thanks to God, my wonderful husband/coach and amazing certified nurse midwife, I was able to have another natural childbirth. I only pushed for 10 minutes (hate me now!). Rachel weighed 6 pounds 3 ounces and was 19 inches long. We came home today andRead the whole post >>

Bedtime Story

No, this little tale doesn’t involve me waking up in a pool of water to discover my water has broken and then racing to the hospital to deliver a healthy baby. I’m still pregnant, still having contractions, still dilating (can’t still be effacing since I reached the 100 percent mark last week), just not inRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
