Waiting…

I am a firm believer in allowing babies to come naturally into the world, but I have to admit I’m getting just a wee bit antsy. For two weeks now I’ve been in the “you’ll have this baby any day now” category. Last Wednesday I was 100 percent effaced, 4 cm dilated and our lowRead the whole post >>

A Morning Prayer (36 Weeks and Counting…)

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.” (Philippians 4:6) A morning prayer: Dear God, First off, prayers of thanksgiving are in store. We have made it to 36 weeks and our little miracle is still tucked safely away inside of my womb.Read the whole post >>

Bed Rest: Day Two

I am being waited on hand-and-foot and it’s driving me nuts. Yesterday my father-in-law (Madeline’s Pop) came by and brought us lunch. He also mailed letters for me and played with Madeline. He was planning on taking her out to the playground or for some other outdoor adventure, but she wanted nothing of it. SheRead the whole post >>

35 Weeks and Counting…

“Quiet! Be still!” (Mark 4:39) You learn something new every day. Maybe a fact like the Nile holds the “World’s Longest River” title. Sometimes it’s a practical tip like to try zapping a chunk lemon in the microwave to clean off food residue and leave it smelling fresh, a pointer I recently gleaned during aRead the whole post >>

Cause of Our Joy

I like to think that Mary has a good sense of humor. She was a mother, after all, and I’ve learned laughter is an essential part of raising children. Sometimes a good joke or a silly act can go a long way in keeping peace, getting your kids to cooperate or diffusing potential tantrums. LikeRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
