Becoming More Christ-y

This morning the girls were working on an impromptu Christmas play to perform for my husband and me. The rehearsals began with a manic (and obnoxiously loud) rendition of “Jingle Bells.” “Mommy, we want you to be surprised, so don’t listen,” Madeline instructed. Don’t listen. Ah, wouldn’t that be nice if I could tune outRead the whole post >>

Advent Smorgasbord

Life’s been incredibly busy, which explains the recent onslaught of photos (rather than words) of my kids that are incredibly interesting if you answer to the name of Grandma. Otherwise, not so much. Our family has lots of exciting things unfolding in our lives (no, I’m not pregnant), and I hope to go into moreRead the whole post >>

Twenty-Fourth Day of Advent

Spread some holiday cheer by making a surprise phone call to a friend or family member (everyone will be expecting a call tomorrow or on Christmas, not today). Ask your loved one how they are and listen. Allow him or her to lead the conversation.

Twenty-Third Day of Advent

Consider the following Gospel reading: “Some in the crowd who heard these words said, ‘This is truly the Prophet.’ Others said, ‘This is the Messiah.’” (John 7:40-41) During the Advent season, we most often relate to Jesus as an infant sleeping in a manger. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
