Nativity Play

Madeline made her big acting debut in our homeschooling co-op’s Nativity play on Sunday afternoon (well, when she was 2, she played a confused donkey in the stable, but her only line was “Mommy!” and it wasn’t in the script). As one of the three kings, she croaked (she’s caught my nasty cold), “I bringRead the whole post >>

Second Sunday of Advent

Light two purple candles, and sing O Come, O Come Emmanuel (if you’re not the caroling types, feel free to play your favorite recording of the song). Also, Kris Chatfield, a friend of mine from church and my homeschooling co-op shared this wonderful Advent tradition her family has with me: “My parents always did thisRead the whole post >>

Seventh Day of Advent: Feast of St. Nicholas

In honor of St. Nicholas, give an anonymous gift to someone in need. Since St. Nicholas is known as the protector of children, do something fun with your kids today. Sip hot cocoa together. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
