Weighing In

I’ll spare you yet another post related to making peace with your body and focus instead on my delectable dude who’s weighing in at just over 17 pounds at 4 1/2 months. He hasn’t missed too many meals, clearly. The girls told our pediatrician that he’s going to like jalapenos and Indian food because that’sRead the whole post >>

A Good Excuse

UPDATED: Arrghhh! This post is driving me a crazy because it will not let me insert proper paragraph breaks. Arrghhh (again). I have a good excuse to not sweat this, but, yes, I’m still sweating it. UPDATED (again): I sort of fixed it by manually putting in code. Very annoying. But there are bigger problemsRead the whole post >>

2 Quick Takes Because That’s About All I Can Handle Right About Now

~1~ Madeline, 6, keeps referring to Thomas’s penis as “The Defender.” The first time she referred to it as such, I asked her what she meant. “It’s his defender,” she explained. “He pees on you to defend against you changing his diaper.” Speaking of his penis, poor boy has caused quite a commotion in aRead the whole post >>

Randomness

I haven’t had the time or even really the desire to flesh out any great thoughts lately. So in a lieu of a more meaningful post, I’m just going to share some random glimpses into our life lately. I might start doing this more often, actually, even when it’s not 7 Quick Takes Friday. It’sRead the whole post >>

Breastfeeding & Calling a Truce in the Mommy Wars

Today I want to talk about why it’s time we all call a truce in the mommy wars by focusing first on breastfeeding. This isn’t a “how-to-have-a-happy-nursing-relationship-post” or an “I’m-a-lactivist-and-here’s-why-treatise.” On the contrary, I want to make all moms feel comfortable around here – even those who for whatever reason were unable to or choseRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
