Disappointment

The girls and I had plans for a lovely springtime outing today, but you know the best laid plans of munchkins and moms often go awry…or something like that. The baby woke up feeling like a preheated oven as she burrowed into me. I don’t usually take temps – I live by the mantra thatRead the whole post >>

Perfect Schmerfect

When I was around 3, I fell and cut my mouth while playing in the backyard. I ran screaming to my mom with blood dribbling down my chin and onto my summer dress. My mom assumed my tears were the product of my pain and immediately started to comfort me. “Does it hurt?” she asked.Read the whole post >>

A Day to Live

For years now I’ve kept a news clipping wedged in the pages of an old scrapbook as a reminder of my mortality. The headline reads: School in mourning for girl killed in crash. Beneath the headline is a picture of a blonde beauty at the cusp of becoming a woman. Her name was Shauna Casteen.Read the whole post >>

Will Work For Children

“So what do you do?” It never fails. Within minutes of arriving at a social event (on the rare occasion I attend one), someone invariably asks me that irksome question. So there I am feeling like I’m standing under an interrogation light. My questioner is smiling, eyes attentive, waiting for my reply. A list ofRead the whole post >>

Bath Time

Dear Rachel Marie, On Friday night, we were alone – a rare occurrence for the two of us (aside from middle-of-the-night feedings). Your daddy had to work late and your big sister was having a sleepover at Nana and Pop’s. I took advantage of our solitary pairing and brought you into the bath with me.Read the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
