Surviving Mass with Young Children

Read my latest feature at Faith & Family LIVE: Sunday Morning Scramble: 7 Tips for Attending Mass with Young Children. (Yes, I was inspired to write this after I shared why I believe kids – even the smallest of the small – belong at Mass.)What about you? Any tips for helping little ones worship and/orRead the whole post >>

A Mom’s Prayer

*This post was originally published in August 2008. I’m digging up posts from the archives in order to enjoy my husband’s time off and catch some extra Zzzzzs. My girls had been up before dawn. There had been no time to sit quietly and pray before my preschooler announced, “I’m hungry.” After I fixed aRead the whole post >>

Happy Mother’s Day!

“Thank you, women who are mothers! You have sheltered human beings within yourselves in a unique experience of joy and travail. This experience makes you become God’s own smile upon the newborn child, the one who guides your child’s first steps, who helps it to grow and who is the anchor as the child makesRead the whole post >>

Small Successes 16

To the casual onlooker, I probably don’t look like much of a success right now. I’m wearing the same tee I had on yesterday and while I’ve never had a lengthy grooming process, I’ve taken the term “low maintenance” to new heights. Actually, I don’t feel all that successful right now either. Our super contentRead the whole post >>

Mostly Good Chaos

The other night I was attempting to clean up the kitchen. My toddler was uncharacteristically fussy. My preschooler was in tears because Dr. Dad insisted on removing a bandage from a boo-boo to allow it to heal better and she was terrified it was going to hurt to peel off the sticky thing from herRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
