It Takes a Family

This past weekend my husband had a 24-hour call shift, so I was faced with going to Mass solo with a preschooler, toddler, newborn, an armful of religious books for kids, and the requisite monster diaper bag that rivals any trendy, largish purse starlets tote around (then again, are over sized bags still considered enRead the whole post >>

New Column

You can now read my latest Catholic Mom column: In Search of God’s Graces. An excerpt: “Without prayer we can’t really expect to be receptive to God’s gift of grace. That’s like expecting to land a dream job without any effort. Maybe you’ll get lucky and a headhunter will call out of the blue, butRead the whole post >>

Living a Life Worthy of my Calling

I’m still gestating. I’m also cutting back on computer time to soak up on life with my girls. So here’s a rerun. (I’ll probably be sharing a fair amount of recycled posts in the coming weeks as we adjust to our family of five.) I wrote a version of this post shortly before I wasRead the whole post >>

New Column: Lenten Inspiration for Moms

Here’s an excerpt from “Christ’s Journey to the Cross: Lenten Inspiration for Mothers,” a column that I originally wrote for Canticle that’s now “live” at Catholic Mom and Catholic Exchange: [Jesus] could have given far less; one drop of his blood could have saved us all. Yet, he freely chose to shed every last bitRead the whole post >>

Harden Not My Heart

To the gentleman at daily Mass who repeatedly shoots disapproving glances our way, even when my children are behaving (almost) as piously as saints, please pray for me. I want to be at the table of the Lord as much as you do, but it’s not always easy for me to be there. You mayRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
