Mom the Missionary

The girls and I had a chance to have a brief visit with Madeline’s godmother Lili this week (the above photo is from our get-together). She just returned from a medical trip to Ghana (she’s a pediatric fellow at NYU) and was spending a few days in Atlanta before she headed to Honduras to volunteerRead the whole post >>

The Devil Went Down to Georgia

I recently had plans to go to weekday Mass. My good intentions were nearly thwarted. First, the natives were restless and I woke up not once, not even twice, but three times in the night. At the break of dawn, I had to drag my exhausted, bedraggled zombie of a self out of bed. ARead the whole post >>

Thank You…

To the man who came up to me after Mass today and asked if I needed help carrying things out to the car and then smiled and said he enjoyed hearing my baby “talk” (squeal loudly in frequent intervals is more like it). “She’s very vocal,” I said, apologizing. “She made a lot of noise,Read the whole post >>

The War Zone

Mommy Medic is on guard as we wage a war against the virulent stomach bug. She stands on call if the wounded soldier (AKA a 17-month-old who keeps scooting off the bed and prefers to nap on the towels) needs to heave again or just requires some extra TLC. I’ve debated whether I should devote precious energy to responding to bitter Anonymous vitriol. I have no right to rant about viciousness even when it’s targeted atRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
