She lives!

Yes, I am still among the living. But a few days ago I didn’t feel that way after a strange GI bug took a hold of me and turned me inside out quite literally. This was like the Master Cleanse times 1,000. Not that I’ve ever tried any sort of cleanse. The good news isRead the whole post >>

7 Quick Takes: The Photo-op & She’s Risen from the Blogging Dead Edition

— 1 — Since I have a fall-inspired pile of photos that I knew readers who are actually related to me might enjoy seeing (AKA this post is for you, Nana, and Gaba), I thought I’d jump on the 7 QTs bandwagon after a long hiatus. As for my blogging habits these days, well, theyRead the whole post >>

7 Quick Takes: The Chores, Snake Stew, & More Edition

— 1 — So I witnessed something strange the other day. I was unloading groceries from our minivan when a pickup truck came roaring down the street. Three large flags – including a rebel flag – were proudly pitched int the truck bed and were flailing in the wind. The tricked-out truck screeched to aRead the whole post >>

The Empty Chairs

When we first moved into our home a little less than two years ago, I wasn’t too fond of our neighbor’s plastic chairs. Sounds superficial, I know, but this was my husband and my first home, and I wanted everything to be perfect. The chairs were positioned right next to our driveway on a patchRead the whole post >>

7 Quick Takes: The Missed Opportunity & More Edition

— 1 — Yesterday afternoon someone from Time magazine contacted me about participating in a “conceptual” photo shoot about attachment parenting. They had read some of my posts on the subject and wanted to see if might be able to fly up to New York City with some of my kiddos (my two youngest probably)Read the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
