A Very Good Day Indeed

Madeline’s wishes continue to come true. This morning we discovered a thin blanket of snow on the ground. The girls were eager to play outside, so we bundled up and braved the elements. (My roots may be Northern, but I have transformed into a complete cold weather wimp.) We discovered these tiny animal prints inRead the whole post >>

What a Year!

2009 has been a year of many blessings. There was this sweet baby. Oh, and then news of a family members reversion and a calling. Then there’s my husband’s new job. That’s right! After nine years of medical training, my husband will be earning R.D. degree – as in real doctor (I did not coinRead the whole post >>

7 Quick Takes (Vol. 8): The Delicious Baby Edition

After a “quick takes” hiatus, I’m back. For this week’s edition, I’m sharing closeups of our newest addition (born on Palm Sunday) because I don’t want to forget… …the way her tiny ear moves with each suck when she nurses. …the way her small starburst hand wraps tightly around my finger. …the way smiles flutterRead the whole post >>

Today I took ten minutes out of my day to count my many blessings. Making Gratitude a Way of Life

“For seven days you shall celebrate this pilgrim feast in honor of the LORD, your God, in the place, which he chooses; since the LORD, your God, has blessed you in all your crops and in all your undertakings, you shall do nought but make merry.” -Deuteronomy 16:15 I’ve often wondered how those first pilgrimsRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
