Birthday Daybook

I’ve really enjoyed reading Daybooks from bloggers like Elizabeth Foss and Sarah Reinhard over the past few months, so I’ve decided to start occasionally sharing my own Daybook. The Simple Woman’s Daybook idea began with Peggy in 2008. I’ve decided to adopt some of its headings, make up some of my own as well asRead the whole post >>

7 Quick Takes

~1~ We hope to hit an orchard this fall but even if that doesn’t end up happening given our busy weekends over the next few weeks, I plan on stocking up on apples while they’re in season. (Apples hit their harveting peak this month.) Now what to do with all our bounty? Well, Madeline andRead the whole post >>

Fall Fun

I’m over at Faith & Family LIVE today (and so is Madeline searching for the great pumpkin two years ago) talking about how my family heralds in the fall. Won’t you stop by and share your own ways of savoring this golden season? *I’m not officially (or spiritually) back yet, but things are looking up.Read the whole post >>

Spilt Milk + Raspberries + Yogurt = Crying

Don’t cry over spilled milk. Moms of food-flinging, fidgety babes know the adage all too well, and perhaps we can summon the strength to successfully dam the tears over a pool of milk on the table. But a raspberry smoothie splattered over beige carpet? That’s a different story altogether. My friends, when you’re faced withRead the whole post >>

Scones!

I love my blog readers. I really do. Not only do they make me feel like I’m not just pouring my thoughts into a black hole, but they encourage me and remind me I’m not alone in the trenches of parenthood. Oh, and I love it when they notice all the little details of myRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
