A Slice of Humble Pie

Okay, so I know I’m supposed to be staying away from here, but I actually have some silence right now and I have some thoughts loudly ticking in my head that just have to get out. Faith & Family recently reported it was reprinting an old article of mine that included tips on attending MassRead the whole post >>

A Child’s Growth Does Not Always Glitter Like Gold

Here’s some wisdom I’m keeping close as I embark on my new life living with four kids under 6. The passages are excerpted from The Child Under Six by James L. Hymes, which my wonderful mom-in-law gave me. The book remains one of my all-time favorite parenting books, but it’s sadly out of print. “TheRead the whole post >>

Big Day, Big Thoughts

Today is a big day for our family. My mama arrived at Emory at 5 a.m. this morning for an angiogram and then will have a procedure that will hopefully successfully treat at least one of her brain aneurysms. My dad gave us an update and there’s another procedure before hers, so we won’t knowRead the whole post >>

Worst Mommy Day Ever

I hit an all-time low today as a mom. If there was such a thing as the “Worst Mommy Hall of Fame,” I’d be a front runner for membership. The day started out okay. We went on a walk with a friend. Madeline complained a bit about her bottom hurting. She was whiny, my little,Read the whole post >>

A Simple Path

Now that I am expecting baby number two, I am beginning to think about all those sleepless nights and marathon nursing sessions ahead of me. My firstborn was not what you would call a sleeper. Far from it – she was more like a zombie and I, the hapless, sleep-loving mommy, quickly mutated into aRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
