Yarn Along: Little, Hopeful Hands

Last week three older girls from some homeschooling families I’ve met came over to be Mother’s Helpers so I could continue to stay off my feet and let this baby safely and quietly incubate further. (We’ll hit the 36 mark in a few days. People are calling this a miracle baby. I’m not arguing.) TwoRead the whole post >>

Yarn Along: Progress Not Perfection

Well, it’s a start. So I went ahead and picked up my knitting needles again. They’d been gathering dust, along with colorful skeins of yarn, in a basket in the corner of my closet for months and months. I used to knit fairly often but never very well. When I was pregnant with my firstRead the whole post >>

Lessons from a Beach To-Do List

We recently returned from a week of basking in the sun. Thanks to a very generous aunt, we planted ourselves right on the beach and stayed at her condo for free for an entire week. It was just the change of pace and change of scenery we all needed. I’m busy catching up on laundryRead the whole post >>

{this moment} Beach Bum

{this moment} – A Friday ritual. A single photo – no words – capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember. Heaven

Heaven: Two little girls (missing only the big sister who went with Daddy to her matinee performance). A pile of books. A cocoon of covers. A quiet Saturday afternoon. Heaven – as simply and lovely as that. “Cozy,” said the 2-year-old. “Yes,” I agreed. I read. We cuddled. The big sisters put their small handsRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
