On Middle Ground

I had a fruitful spiritual direction session a few months back that I’ve been meaning to write about. Fortunately, I take notes, so I can write about things way after the fact. Such is my life right now. Anyway, among other things we spoke about marriage and how I grow in virtue just by lovingRead the whole post >>

What a Year!

2009 has been a year of many blessings. There was this sweet baby. Oh, and then news of a family members reversion and a calling. Then there’s my husband’s new job. That’s right! After nine years of medical training, my husband will be earning R.D. degree – as in real doctor (I did not coinRead the whole post >>

Daddy, M.D.

2-year-old, noticing Daddy is in a white coat rather than just scrubs one morning: Is Daddy ‘weally’ a doctor? Me: Yes. 2-year-old: Why you a doctor, Daddy? Daddy: What else should I be? 2-year-old: A daddy. (Like duh.) To patients and his colleagues, my husband may be a radiologist, someone who interprets images to helpRead the whole post >>

Shame on Me

My husband has been working long hours all week. He gets home around midnight just when my head hits the pillow after shushing and nursing the baby into a deep sleep. Having a Baby Changes Everything

I bet the title of this post gotcha. No baby yet. Still gestating… Just reflecting on babies, Match Day, and why my husband and I don’t mind being in the minority in the medical community for starting a family while he was still in medical school and continuing to grow our family while his never-endingRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
