Love note

Yesterday I discovered this little love note on my desk: Translation: Dear Mommy, I love you. You don’t look old. — I’m quite convinced that my 5-year-old would surely have written something like, “you are radiant,” “you are beautiful,” or maybe even, “you are the fountain of splendid youth” if “radiant,” “beautiful,” and “fountain ofRead the whole post >>

I live in uncertain times (this post has nothing to do with what you might think it does)

On Saturday, I woke up early to drive over an hour to where my little brother and his wife live, so I could support my sister-in-law (who has Type 1 diabetes) in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes. After a week of staying up far too late, the lack of sleep hitRead the whole post >>

Grocery list turned wish list

For the record, I’m highly suspicious that it was Dave (my husband) who added “lots of toys” to my preliminary grocery list.

Whassup?

My little man has a habit of dangling his tongue out of his mouth when he’s happy. His mom has a habit of turning his happy, tongue-dangling moments into photo-ops. I thought about writing some further commentary here, but these pictures say it all. Whassup…..

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
