I Want to Be Here

As a parent, I’ve never had to see the inside of an ER, but tonight I found myself longing to be there, holding my little one. I knew my daughter was safe in Dr. Daddy’s arms. I knew it didn’t make much sense for both of us to journey to the ER and to toteRead the whole post >>

Queen for the Day

My family gave me the royal treatment yesterday. After church, the girls and Dave made a delicious brunch. Scrambled eggs with cheese and sauteed onions and mushrooms served as the main dish. Later Madeline and Rae adorned me with a handmade crown, and I was bejeweled with a dazzling bead necklace also crafted by preschoolRead the whole post >>

Happy Mother’s Day!

“Thank you, women who are mothers! You have sheltered human beings within yourselves in a unique experience of joy and travail. This experience makes you become God’s own smile upon the newborn child, the one who guides your child’s first steps, who helps it to grow and who is the anchor as the child makesRead the whole post >>

It Takes a Family

This past weekend my husband had a 24-hour call shift, so I was faced with going to Mass solo with a preschooler, toddler, newborn, an armful of religious books for kids, and the requisite monster diaper bag that rivals any trendy, largish purse starlets tote around (then again, are over sized bags still considered enRead the whole post >>

How could it have taken this to make me see that [my child] is the one thing in my life that I got right the very first try?”Read the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
