Just a Personal Reminder

Back in January I made a wish/resolution for 2011 over at Inside Catholic. Lately the tedium of home life has been getting to me (think daunting laundry piles, constantly plying little tummies with snacks, and putting socks on wiggly feet over and over again), so I just feel like I need the reminder to doRead the whole post >>

3 Going on 16

“Leave me alone,” my daughter whines, pushing me away. “Let me help you,” I say fiddling with the source of her angst, a stubborn clasp on a pair of scuffed Mary Janes.  But it’s no use: I’m talking to her hand, which is now sprawled across my face. Thankfully, my daughter’s sass doesn’t last long.Read the whole post >>

The Big, Black Boot, Solo Birdwatching Expeditions and How It All Relates to Risk, Love, & Trust

Mary Elizabeth is confined to the boot for 3 weeks. My my almost 21-month-old has a broken leg. It stinks. Not only because I hate to see any of my babies suffer but because I feel like I should have been able to prevent it from happening. (Oh, and despite her being the peanut ofRead the whole post >>

God, I Have Issues

Recently I found myself in an unusual social setting given my station in life. Young college co-eds surrounded me. The sometimes forced and sometimes real profundity of their conversations filled my ears. There was a girl with elliptical green eyes and the face of a doll. She looked like a doll. Not all of them wereRead the whole post >>

From Fearful to Wistful

Good news: My husband has been snuggling with our sweet baby the past several nights, and I’ve actually gotten more than four hours of sleep in a row! Woo-hoo! Mary Elizabeth has finally hit the “slept through the night” milestone. (I refuse to consider how our upcoming move will likely lead to sleep regression.) SomeRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
