Saint Gaba

Madeline eyes the silver watch in my mom’s hands. “Can I wear it?” she asks. Gaba slips the thin band onto Madeline’s tiny wrist. It’s not a watch my mom wears. It has an outdated style and its gears have stopped, and it no longer tells the time. But what it lacks in function andRead the whole post >>

The Cheese Stands Alone

There’s a great discussion going on over at Faith & Family LIVE! after Arwen Mosher’s excellent post where she asks an important question: How should we strike the balance between encouragement and realism with our kids? She writes, “I think it’s great to tell kids that most things are within their reach if they workRead the whole post >>

Where Simple Pleasures Rule

I remember how I used to spend Friday evenings in my pre-mom days. Dave and I would often take a short nap to kick off the weekend. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
