A Bed Rest Survival Guide (Unabridged)

I’m becoming a bed rest pro. Three out of four of my pregnancies have now resulted in some form of mandated “taking it easy.” Now before I write anything further, I have to be clear that I’ve never had to endure the strictest form of bed rest when you end up in the supine positionRead the whole post >>

Girl or Boy?

Okay, it’s time for a random, fun post. As regular readers know, we’re not finding out the gender of this fourth baby, who is thankfully still staying put although intermittent contractions continue. A lot of family members and friends have their own predictions, but I thought it might be fun to see what you guysRead the whole post >>

What I’m Pondering Today…

…and given my recent “restricted activity/modified bedrest” (or whatever you want to call it) mandate, I’ve ample time to ponder. “Our body is a cenacle, a monstrance; through its crystal the world should see God.” ~Saint Gianna Molla   Thanks to a friend for sending this along to me.

Baby Update

First of all, thank you for your prayers, thoughts, and kindness. When I was at the hospital, resting on my side alone, watching the fluids drip-drip-drip down the wires and into my dehydrated body, and just waiting for the contractions to PLEASE stop, I debated whether I should post something on my blog or TwitterRead the whole post >>

Please pray

This will be quick. I’m typing with my thumbs and have my first ever IV (ugh) I’ve been admitted to the hospital for pre-term labor. I’m 30 weeks, so baby still has some growing to do. My midwife is confident that fluids will help slow down the contractions and that I should be able toRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.

“She could never be a saint, but she thought she could be a martyr if they killed her quick.”

―Flannery O'Connor
