Running my own race

I’ll never forget the first time I ran six consecutive miles. I was 14 and I’d been running a three-mile loop all summerlong, several times a week. One morning I headed out to the park across my street, and I broke into a run. The sky was a steely grey and before long sheets ofRead the whole post >>

A change of running (and living) plans

So often when I discuss body image, I relate it to how we see ourselves aesthetically and physically. We look in the mirror and all we see are the dimples, the flabby stomach, the weak arms, or the extra skin. We see a photo of us, and we can’t stand how we look in it.Read the whole post >>

Pure Barre’s Feel Good Month & My Personal Testimony

Pure Barre of Athens has launched a Feel Good campaign during the month of April. They invited me to share my testimony about my fitness journey and how I’ve ended up as a Pure Barre devotee. They’ve also invited me to have copies of my book Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body at an eventRead the whole post >>

New year, same, old imperfect-but-okay-with-that-me

They’re everywhere. The promises of a new year and a new you. Now is the time to reinvent yourself. Get more organized. Quit smoking. Lose 5, 10, 15, or 20-plus pounds. Exercise more. Sleep more. Eat less sugar. Personally, I really like my 5-year-old’s New Year’s Resolution: Be nice to people. Now that has eternalRead the whole post >>

My hips are impinging me and so is my attitude

I know it’s been pretty quiet around here, and I still haven’t gotten around to posting a birthday letter to my wild man (tsk, tsk). I’ve just been so busy. I’ve had a few speaking engagements (one is this Friday, and I am so looking forward to the mom retreat), which are always such aRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
