Small Successes 16

To the casual onlooker, I probably don’t look like much of a success right now. I’m wearing the same tee I had on yesterday and while I’ve never had a lengthy grooming process, I’ve taken the term “low maintenance” to new heights. Actually, I don’t feel all that successful right now either. Our super contentRead the whole post >>

Word to the Wise on Sleepless Nights

“So when you get poked in the ribs at 3 a.m., or your little jack-in-the-box pops out of bed for the fifteenth time asking how long ’til his next birthday, or you painstakingly choose and purchase the perfect toddler bed but your child refuses to even sit on it, try to see the joke. Thank You…

…for humoring me and for putting up with my ridiculously self-absorbed, sleepless-in-Georgia post. I know I recently wrote about not comparing crosses, but when I have a cousin with leukemia fighting for his life, a friend who just lost someone important to her family to suicide, other friends who are suffering the loss of aRead the whole post >>

Operating in Survival Mode

They look cute, don’t they? Two sweet girls slumbering side-by-side. If only the pictures captured how I felt: Content and well-rested. I’m anything but that after last night. After Dave and I returned home from a short weekend getaway, I discovered that Rachel Marie no longer wanted to sleep alone. Her nana had informed usRead the whole post >>

Bedtime Banter

Me: I’m going to stay for five more minutes. Preschooler: No, you have to stay for 20 or 60 half-hours. How long is that? Me: I don’t know exactly.* (I’m trying to figure out a rough estimate in my head, but I appear to be unable to handle those kind mental gymnastics at this hour.)Read the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
