Forgetting Myself

I haven’t had much time to write lately. I’m still trying to go to bed earlier, although my husband (a night owl) has been home more this week, so I have been breaking my curfew a bit to spend time with him. So I’ve lost evening writing time and thanks to the end of DaylightRead the whole post >>

The Single Best Thing I’ve Done Lately to Be a Better Wife and Mom

For the past few weeks I’ve been doing something radical. Almost every night after the girls’ story time, bedtime prayers, and tuck-in time, instead of resting beside them for a few minutes before popping up to conquer the world (one dirty sock at a time) I’ve instead slipped into their warm nest of covers, and I’veRead the whole post >>

God, I Have Issues

Recently I found myself in an unusual social setting given my station in life. Young college co-eds surrounded me. The sometimes forced and sometimes real profundity of their conversations filled my ears. There was a girl with elliptical green eyes and the face of a doll. She looked like a doll. Not all of them wereRead the whole post >>

Serving v. Judging

It’s funny how so often a theme pops up in my life that just won’t go away. Since writing this, I’ve stumbled across various quotes related to being a true disciple of Christ, about how it has less to do with judging and more to do with loving. There have been emails, too, from readersRead the whole post >>

Keep Your Eyes on Your Own Work

A Catholic friend, who knows I marble some of Charlotte Mason’s philosophies into my homeschooling curriculum and home atmosphere, recently asked me my thoughts on Charlotte Mason as a “Catholic Impossibility” after she came across a negative post on a discussion board about the dangers of using CM. (For the record: This friend was notRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
