Empty Yourself

*I wrote this post a few days ago, but I’m just getting around to posting it. I know you understand. :) “Excuse me, ma’am?” a teenager invades my deep thoughts as I stand stewing over what brand of canned black beans will provide the best nutritional bang for the buck. Organic or not? I glanceRead the whole post >>

Noise

“Oh, the noise! Oh, the noise! Noise! Noise! Noise! That’s one thing he hated! The NOISE! NOISE! NOISE! NOISE!” From Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch Who Stole Christmas Mr. Grinch, you and me both. This may very well be the most wonderful time of the year, but it’s also the nosiest. All is not calm, asRead the whole post >>

Becoming More Christ-y

This morning the girls were working on an impromptu Christmas play to perform for my husband and me. The rehearsals began with a manic (and obnoxiously loud) rendition of “Jingle Bells.” “Mommy, we want you to be surprised, so don’t listen,” Madeline instructed. Don’t listen. Ah, wouldn’t that be nice if I could tune outRead the whole post >>

Lessons from a Blogging Faux Pas

Recently, a reader left an anonymous comment that pointed out a poor word choice in one of my posts. Some loyal readers immediately came to my defense, which I really appreciated. However in this case, I believe I was in the wrong, and the reader was doing what he or she ought to do asRead the whole post >>

Filling the Gaps

This past Sunday I attended Mass at my parents’ church. I always enjoy their pastor’s homilies when I’m visiting, but this one was a standout. Father spoke of the saints in honor of All Saints Day and how they are here to help us in our Christian journey. Father reminded us that becoming a saintRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.

―Flannery O'Connor
