Cleanup Time

I recently had a long phone conversation with a very wise, old woman who has a few decades on me (like almost six) whom I admire and love dearly. We talked about motherhood and how exhausting and overwhelming it can be at times (she’s a mom of nine kids). We talked about faith (or lackRead the whole post >>

Goose Bumps

After a particularly rough day, I recently prayed (begged is a more accurate term given my desperate despondency over a personal intention): “God, I don’t need a miracle, but I do need to know your hand is at work in my life.” (I should have added, “But if you have any miracles to spare, I’mRead the whole post >>

Being Open to God’s Plan

Some of my kids have had the sniffles this week, and I’m not feeling so hot either (more emotionally drained than physically – more on that maybe one of these days). Plus, we were at Gaba’s a few days this week to keep her from going completely stir crazy as she continues to recover fromRead the whole post >>

Saint Gaba

Madeline eyes the silver watch in my mom’s hands. “Can I wear it?” she asks. Gaba slips the thin band onto Madeline’s tiny wrist. It’s not a watch my mom wears. It has an outdated style and its gears have stopped, and it no longer tells the time. But what it lacks in function andRead the whole post >>

Negative Energy

I don’t have time for negative energy now or ever. You know the kind of energy you devote to either responding to someone who disagrees with you or to worrying over the troll lurking in the combox after a post. Then there’s your own personal negative energy that’s like a force field around you, deflectingRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
