Be the good person they think you are

I love my mom for many reasons. One reason is that we can be laughing one moment and then be delving into some serious stuff without even realizing we made the jump until we’re both thinking aloud about how yes, this is something that could help us lead a more holy life. Which is usuallyRead the whole post >>

Blessed v. Lucky

Life has been a little unlucky around here lately. We’re just not finding our groove, and lots of little things seem to be going wrong. We ordered tadpoles, for instance, to begin our spring study on metamorphosis, and our two little guys arrived limp and completely lifeless. The girls had waited months for them andRead the whole post >>

The Sole Purpose of this Post is to Make You Feel Better About Yourself

Way, way at the bottom of this post I alluded to the fact that sleep-deprivation is taking its toll on my cerebral capacity. Sometimes I feel like I’m losing my mind. Case in point: Instead of ordering one $50 gift card to thank my daughter’s coaches for a fun season, I ordered 50 gift cardsRead the whole post >>

Ghostbusters

If you’re anything like me, you’re not haunted by ghosts or goblins. Yet, there’s probably something less supernormal but more real that haunts you and has a way of preventing you from living a full life. Is there a past sin you’ve never confessed? Or are you grappling with residual guilt that remains from anRead the whole post >>

Thomas’s Birth Story

The very early morning of August 28th, 2011 Around 2 a.m. I woke up restless. I was feeling crampy, but this was nothing new. Contractions had been coming and going for weeks. For anyone new to my blog, here’s a brief recap of my most recent pregnancy: I started bleeding early on and was afraidRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
