My Epiphany

The Christmas decorations will slowly be coming down this week, but Father reminded me at the Mass celebrating the Epiphany of the Lord that the route is still before us. We are still seeking Christ.  He also talked about how when you receive a card with the photo of the Magi, you always see themRead the whole post >>

Teaching Children Contentment

Here’s a snippet from an Advent-themed column that originally appeared at Faith & Family LIVE! and more recently was published over at Catholic News Agency’s Catholic Womanhood page. “I have a special treat for you,” I said, showing Madeline a bobbing helium balloon. “Oh! Thank you!” She smiled and took the balloon, but then myRead the whole post >>

New Column: Peace Be With Me

An excerpt my latest Inside Catholic column: “I’ll never stop trying to find the quiet — especially during Advent, when we’re supposed to see past the holiday hoopla, the mass commercialism, the sing-song-y, overly synthesized Simply-Having-a-Wonderful-Christmastime kind of vapid lyrics, the chronic case of the “gimmes” that begins to plague children before the Thanksgiving leftoversRead the whole post >>

Motherhood is Not a Prison Sentence

Happy Feast of Saint Nicholas!  Here’s one from the archives because I haven’t had much time to write lately (obviously). This is an old column (rather than a blog post). It originally appeared at Faith & Family LIVE! and more recently at the Catholic New Agency’s Catholic Womanhood website. I’m starting to raise sympathetic eyebrowsRead the whole post >>

Believing Through the Hardest Times

This is an old column from Faith & Family LIVE, but it just feels so appropriate right now, and I’m still not finding adequate time to write new stuff. I just read a magazine article about how the people of Haiti are still struggling to rebuild their lives. We were shocked and devastated when theRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
