Empty Yourself

*I wrote this post a few days ago, but I’m just getting around to posting it. I know you understand. :) “Excuse me, ma’am?” a teenager invades my deep thoughts as I stand stewing over what brand of canned black beans will provide the best nutritional bang for the buck. Organic or not? I glanceRead the whole post >>

Noise

“Oh, the noise! Oh, the noise! Noise! Noise! Noise! That’s one thing he hated! The NOISE! NOISE! NOISE! NOISE!” From Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch Who Stole Christmas Mr. Grinch, you and me both. This may very well be the most wonderful time of the year, but it’s also the nosiest. All is not calm, asRead the whole post >>

This is What Hope Looks Like

And most of all, it looks like this: His name is Thomas (he’s the one with the white t-shirt thrown over his shoulder), but he often answers to T-Dog. He’s my 16-year-old cousin who wears a Nike hat with the words “LIVESTRONG” imprinted on it. And that is what he does every day: He livesRead the whole post >>

Cleanup Time

I recently had a long phone conversation with a very wise, old woman who has a few decades on me (like almost six) whom I admire and love dearly. We talked about motherhood and how exhausting and overwhelming it can be at times (she’s a mom of nine kids). We talked about faith (or lackRead the whole post >>

The Queen of Maternal Empathy

Whatever sorrows life brings, there is someone who can empathize with you. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
