How dieting is like foot binding

January is a popular time for women of all shapes and sizes to make goals and devote every waking hour as well as their finite and precious energy into forming – or sometimes just thinking about – habits with the sole purpose of shrinking their bodies. But these efforts – even if we’ve convinced ourselvesRead the whole post >>

Fertility, femininity, motherhood, wisdom, and #postcardsforMacron

Mom of *only* 5, so I guess my cerebral capacity won’t be called in to question…yet. So just in case, here are my stats: graduated in 3 years summa cum laude from @universityofga Honors Program. Booya. #postcardsforMacron A few days ago on Twitter (that’s my tweet up above), I jumped on the very important #postcardsforMacronRead the whole post >>

What I’ve learned about friendship over the years

As I’ve been traveling through “True Friend,” the latest Take Up & Read scripture study, I’ve been thinking a lot about how my views of friendship have changed throughout my life. I have a few scant memories of my earliest neighborhood friends in McHenry, Illinois – a wispy, freckled girl named Chelsea as well asRead the whole post >>

The best detox ever!

For me, it’s more like “Die negative thoughts die! Die hate die! Die every single meal plan that demonizes food and calories die! Die body comparisons die! Die fat phobic culture die! {Let’s Not} Bring Sexy Back

I was in the kitchen making final dinner preparations as my older children were setting the table when I overheard my then 4-year-old ask her 9-year-old big sister, “Maddy, why is sexy a bad word?” There was a pregnant pause. Then Madeline slowly began to speak, “Well…uh. You know, I think that’s a question forRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
