Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

I was recently invited to partake in a discussion about body image with HuffPost Live. Unfortunately, I lost my Internet connection not once but twice, and I may have disturbed at least one slumbering child while cursing blasted technology. (“Mommy, how’d your interview go last night? I heard you yelling at the computer and askingRead the whole post >>

Weighty Issues

Join the weighty conversation over at Crisis Magazine following my interview with Zoe Romanowsky. (Just don’t mind the embarrassingly large photo of me.) An excerpt: “I truly believe that women, in particular, suffer from poor body image as a result of a spiritual attack. It all started in the Garden of Eden, when Satan temptedRead the whole post >>

Among Women Podcast: Making Peace with Your Body

I’m honored to be a guest on this week’s Among Women Podcast with the industrious and faithful Pat Gohn. (If you haven’t ever tuned in to Pat’s award-winning podcast, she not only covers great topics, but she has a radio voice – smooth and soothing to listen to – and, in fact, worked in radioRead the whole post >>

Being a Hottie v. Being Healthy – Part I

There have been several posts related to weight and appearance circulating around the Catholic blogosphere in recent weeks. I’ve read all of them with interest because body image – the way we perceive how we look – is something that’s never far from my thoughts. I’ve made an effort to read each post as aRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
