Still-Life with Kool-Aid

I’m always looking for simple ways to bring art into our home since my 3-year-old is happiest with a pen, crayon, paintbrush, piece of chalk, or marker in her hand.

I saw this scratch-and-sniff activity that uses Kool-Aid mixed with water to create watercolor paint in a recent issue of Wonder Time, and it proved to be a lot of fun. We didn’t have any watercolor paper, so we used white card stock (a suitable substitution).

Madeline’s masterpiece actually still smells like fruit (she painted it three days ago). Beat that, Cézanne!

We did this last night and had so much fun! Thanks for sharing a cool idea.

Hi, I’m Kate

I'm the author of two nonfiction books Getting Past Perfect and Weightless, a storyteller*, overthinker, eating disorder survivor, mom of five, book junkie, socially awkward nerd as well as a speaker (so basically a walking and talking contradiction), and a perfectionist in recovery.

I am currently working towards my MFA in Fiction at Warren Wilson. Thank you to everyone who has read my drafts, offered feedback, and cheered me on. The writing life is often solitary, but I wouldn’t be here without a community of support.
