A Mother’s Work is Never Done (Except When She’s in the Bathroom)

Big Sister: Mommy, you know what?

Me: What?

Big Sister: I can’t believe we’re gonna have another baby. Now I’ll have two babies to watch when you go poop. That’s going to be a lot of work.

I confess. I sometimes ask my 3-year-old (she’s almost 4) to look after her little sister while I escape into the bathroom, and, yes, I sometimes take a little longer than need be and flip through a magazine or just zone out. I swear, I didn’t realize how taxing this was on my preschooler. I will put an end to this forced child labor now. Maybe.

HA! Have done this myself. WITH the magazine/book/catalog. Works like a charm until 4-year-old ALSO mysteriously needs to use the bathroom (aint it always the way).
Nice to have the 5 minutes to oneself, though.

That’s awesome! I don’t have a preschooler to leave my baby with…but I do try to leave her with my husband (sometimes acts like a preschooler!). And I definitely take an extra minute to myself!

so funny! how taxing for your daughter:)

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
