Just Another Part of the Daily Routine

Just before bedtime…

Me: Where’s Daddy?

Madeline: Doing his little thing after work.

(That is, retreating to the bathroom for a few minutes sans clinging kiddos. It’s the poor man’s only respite when he returns home after a long day of work. I can certainly relate.)

Ha ha! I like this one and the post you linked to. Too funny! I don’t get a few minutes even in the bathroom — we live in an old building, and due to settling our door won’t close firmly, and the lock doesn’t come close to lining up. So I always have visitors in there! The toddler, the cat, and then my husband, belatedly, trying to herd them out. Just when I really want an audience, too!

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
