I’ve recently added a few prayer requests over in The God Box (and I encourage you to share your own personal prayer requests or petitions on behalf of others as well), but here’s a summary of some people near and dear to me who could use a shout out to the Big Guy: My brother broke his jaw, knocking four teeth loose when a softball crashed into his face during a rec game. He’s recovering well but has been very hungry subsisting on mostly liquids or soft, mushy food (who really wants to slurp down soup when the temp’s an oppressive 90 degrees?). He’s also going to have to get braces at 30. Ugh.
Still, he’s immensely enjoying his life as a newlywed.
One of his sister-in-law’s close friends who was a bridesmaid with me at the wedding was recently diagnosed with a rare form of MS. She has two young daughters and is just the neatest person. I really enjoyed getting to know her at the wedding and am aching for her as she navigates through this difficult time. Please pray.

Prayer request numero tres: I don’t write about my mama’s enduring health sagas much for various reasons but mostly because she’s very private about it and would just rather focus on the sunshine in life. She’s the kind of person who, if she read any blogs other than her own daughter’s, would stick to happy, sappy ones. The glass is always half-full in her eyes, and you’d never know the kind of chronic, debilitating pain she has to cope with every single day of her life. (I do have two friends I confide in about this and am always thankful for their listening ears.) Aside from her attitude, she also just looks incredible. She’s a beautiful woman inside and out.
But lately even Pollyanna has been feeling a little down. Mama has suffered from a rare neuromuscular condition for much of her life (she’s on a lot of the same medications as someone with MS would be). She’s been to Mayo, and they’ve seen her set of symptoms on others, but it’s a mystery disease that’s difficult to treat. She also has some autoimmune things going on, but she’d be a challenge to even House given the complexity of her symptoms. In fact, the most recent specialist she saw for new symptoms called her and joked saying that he was hoping to pull a House on her but no such luck (yet).
More recently, she’s been dealing with unexplained labile blood pressure. It can go from 180 over something to 6o over something within in a couple of hours, leaving her feeling weak and wobbly. She also has been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia (also known as the suicide disease). The condition rarely presents bilaterally, but with my mom that’s the case. This makes the doctors more weary of performing surgery to to treat the symptoms since it would have to be done on two sides, so she’s trying medications first. So far they have not been much help; the pain’s debilitating and pretty much constant. My mom’s one tough cookie so if she’s having to take it easy and rest with ice packs on her face, then the pain has to be intense. It’s so searing some days that she can’t eat and ends up vomiting.
Anyway, she had a lot of tests recently, and we were hoping all the tests would give us some answers to what’s causing the symptoms, especially the painful ones that are affecting her quality of life. What we’ve discovered so far is that she has an adenoma (tumor) in the jaw and two brain aneurysms as well as an aneurysm in the aortic region. The brain aneurysms may or may not be contributing to her pain; the other discoveries are unrelated. So now it’s off to more specialists to see if and how these things need to be treated. They will likely be treating the brain aneurysms interventionally. She has an appointment today with a head and neck specialist to see about the tumor in her jaw and how they want to proceed.
Meanwhile, the doctors will continue to try to figure out what’s causing her crazy blood pressure and to treat the facial pain. I’ve been praying that my mom gets some answers and some relief or if she doesn’t – at least not right away – she can be blessed with the grace to carry this very heavy and persistent cross. Imagine feeling like you-know-what but not having a real diagnosis or reason for your symptoms. This is another reason my mom doesn’t say much; she sometimes feels like others might think she’s a crazy, but she’s no hypochondriac (that would be my dad :-)). In fact, she’s been putting off seeing any further specialists until my husband counseled her to pursue this. (We have been so grateful to have a physician in the family. He’s been in contact with her doctors and has been reading all of her images.)
I recently texted this Saint Ignatius of Loyola quote to my mom:
“If God causes you to suffer much, it is a sign that He has great designs for you and that He certainly intends to make you a saint.”
Actually, my oldest has already pretty much canonized her.

Last but not least: A friend of a friend, whom I don’t know all that well, needs prayers because her mother has just entered hospice after a long, difficult fight with cancer.

If any Apple execs happen to stumble across this humble corner of cyberspace, I’ve got a new image for an iPhone print ad for you:
My 2-year-old doesn’t get her hands on my phone too often but when she does, it’s pure joy!

Thanks to all of you who chimed in during my last QTs and offered your insight as to whether or not a waffle maker and ice cream maker are worth the splurge. I decided to go ahead and order this waffle maker and have already made a big batch of waffles and frozen the extras for future breakfasts, but I’m going to wait on an ice cream contraption for now.
Now I have to decide if an electric egg scrambler is worth the investment. Only kidding. Seen any stupid kitchen gear on the market lately?

At a recent prenatal appointment, my midwife said I should expect to have this baby early since I’ve had all of the others early. “You’ll likely have the baby between 37 and 39 weeks. Don’t expect to go full-term.”
I expected I’d hatch the little one early, but thinking I’ve only got about 9 weeks left is just crazy.
Of course, my husband planned his work schedule around an early arrival, so this probably means this bambino will be late.

And, finally, a drum roll, please. Announcing the winner of the Wacky & Tacky Contest…
(On the last day of soccer camp, the coaches asked participants to wear a wacky and tacky costume. Madeline took the request very seriously. It paid off. She got the most cheers from the crowd and claimed the Wacky & Tacky title. It was a very good day.)
As always, thanks to Jen for hosting. Keep her close in prayer. Her fifth baby will soon be here (she’s scheduled to be induced on July 22nd).
Have a good weekend!

Hi pretty mama. Thanks for trusting us with this need to lift your own mama up in prayer. My mother was diagnosed with MS when I was a toddler, and though it was the relapsing/remitting kind while I was growing up, a serious car accident when I was in college caused a dramatic change for the worse in her health. She has constant jaw pain (among other things) and I know from watching her suffer with it that it can be so exhausting and hopeless. I will definitely be praying that there will be answers for your mother and that she might find some relief – soon!
Praying for you, too, as you colabor with God in creation of life! Keep us updated, sister! XOXO

There seem to be two kinds of pregnant mamas right now: those on the verge of delivery and those delivering in December. I’m the latter. :)
Prayers for your prayer requests going up as I type.

My first two were both born early (39w and 36w3d, respectively; both spontaneous labors), so I was SURE my 3rd would be early as well. She showed up at 40w3d. With this one, I don’t know what to expect!
Prayers for all your intentions.

Melanie, I’ve been meaning to ask you. Do you have a recommendation for the best iPhone app to help me in praying the Liturgy of the Hours? I’m confused as to where to start as far as apps go. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. You and Daria are my LOTH go-to girls. :-)

Kate,
My personal favorite LOTH app is iBreviary. I like the format, it’s very pretty, and the translation of the Psalms is the same as in the books. And in the latest version they seem to have got rid of most of the bugs. Universalis has an app; but, like the website, the Psalms use a different translation.
I actually have the Universalis app too and at first I used it frequently as the iBreviary app had a tendency not to have updates on some days. But like I said they seem to have fixed the bugs. If I had to buy just one, I’d get iBreviary.
Both iBreviary and Universalis have the daily Mass readings too, which is handy. IBreviary has not only that but the whole Missal, so if you didn’t feel self-conscious having your iPhone on at Mass you could follow along on your phone.
IBreviary also has a whole slew of prayers, litanies, etc.
I also do like the Divine Office app. They do a daily podcast of Morning and Evening Prayer and the Office of Readings. On days when things are too crazy for me to sneak in Morning Prayer I sometimes listen to the podcast on the way to the grocery store. And the kids like it. I recommend it with a couple of caveats: First, that I sometimes get annoyed by the way they recite the Psalms with too much emotion. I prefer a very flat reading, which is more in keeping with the way monastics pray. It allows the listener to be moved by the words themselves rather than the speaker’s interpretation. Second, that the format in which they say the office may technically be wrong in some of the details. It’s nitpicking, maybe, but some people get really bugged by the little things.
See, what a can of worms you open when you ask me for my opinion. I cannot, cannot be brief.
Other cool Catholic apps are the iConfess app, which has a really good examination of conscience. Also iRosary, which has virtual beads that you slide to simulate the experience of fingering the beads. And it tells you which mysteries you should pray on any given day ( I can never remember that) and remembers where you left off last time you prayed the rosary if you left off in the middle (not that that ever happens to me!) And it includes the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
And iPieta, which has lots of cool prayers and the whole Bible (Douay-Rheims and Vulgate) and a whole bunch of spiritual reading like St Franic de Sales, St Teresa of Avila, various papal encyclicals, etc.

Melanie, I prefer honest and thorough reviews! :-) This was very helpful. I’d heard of all of those LOTH apps, but I wasn’t sure where to start even after skimming the reviews. I trust your endorsement and appreciate it so much!
iRosary and iPiate sound great, too. I think I need to ask for some iTunes gift cards!
God bless.

I’ll definitely keep the aforementioned people in my prayers. It’s a shame to have such pain in one’s life, but I truly believe God equips those in the midst of suffering with the tools to transcend and in their own way understand what they’re going through. I don’t imagine it’s easy, though!
Such a sweet picture of your daughter with the iPhone! My almost-2-year-old son loves when he gets a go at mine. We’ve got an alphabet game and Peekaboo Barn on it for him, and he’s actually learned his barn yard animals quite well from it!
…I’d love a new waffle maker. My husband insists that the one we have is fine. It’s a hand-me-down from his mother, and I’m pretty sure the thing is from the 80s at the latest. It’s only got 2.5 legs to stand on, but it still makes the waffles and hasn’t burned down the house yet, so that’s a plus!

My waffle maker was only about $20 bucks on Amazon. We have Amazon Prime, so shipping was free. It was well worth the investment.
I’ll have to check out Peekaboo Barn.
God bless!

Kate, will be praying for all mentioned. I had no idea about Josh! Which teeth did he lose? Love your mom and hate that she’s having so much pain. She is wonderful!!
