I need these littles as much as they need me

I’ve felt rather sheepish having a post that complains about an unplanned vacation on my front page for so long. I have had days when I’ve stumbled upon a blog where a mom shares her sadness over her children’s absence. These are often days when I have abandoned my increasingly philistine ways and entered intoRead the whole post >>

This little, unexpected vacation can end now

I’ll never again shoot off an insipid tweet like “Leaving on a jet plane” because we all know the next line of the song goes something like this: “Don’t know when I’ll be back again.” And, see, I thought I knew when I’d be back again and when I thought I’d only be gone forRead the whole post >>

Notes from the trenches

After my puke post, a good friend of mine texted me some more hurling euphemisms: making street pizza, shouting groceries, and my personal favorite, Technicolor yawn. I actually received a number of emails and texts after that post. Nothing like the stomach bug to build solidarity among mothers. Feel free to add your own hurlingRead the whole post >>

Snowy day art (a guest post by Madeline Wicker)

Madeline (9)  loves art and decided to teach her little 4-year-old sister how to do an art project inspired by Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Thomas was taking his nap and Rachel was over at the grandparents’ house, and I was actually able to snooze a bit (I was still in recovery mode fromRead the whole post >>

When all else fails, laugh and be grateful

The battle lines are drawn. It’s the Wickers versus the insidious stomach bug and finally after much germ warfare, the Wickers are gaining ground and close to a win. For over a week, I haven been fighting the stomach bug. I’ve been the victim but mostly the medic, running stumbling to the front lines toRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
