Random Post for the Week: Recipe for Homemade Hummus

Remember all those reader questions I was going to get around to answering? I haven’t forgotten about them and will respond to each one in due time, which might mean when my youngest – who’s still in utero heads – off to college. Since I’m busy getting ready for my big trip to Faith &Read the whole post >>

Authenticity Online (Part III of a Case for Happy Mom Blogs)

Today I’m going to wrap up my happy mom blog series by exploring what it means to be authentic online. Part I of the series can be found here (my favorite part of the series), Part II here. — Pope Benedict’s recent letter on World Communications Day discussed the challenge of being authentic and faithful,Read the whole post >>

When Your Child Disappoints You (Or You Disappoint Yourself)

I don’t like to admit this, but I’ve spent a good part of my mothering career feeling responsible for every tantrum, every scowl, every less than desirable behavior my child revealed to me or to the world. If a child screamed at her sister, it was because I was not always gentle with my wordsRead the whole post >>

Bits & Pieces

I didn’t really intend for my recent blogging fast to last as long as it did, but life just sort of swallowed me up and there was little free time to do much of anything, including blog. The break was good for me, but I’m not sure I reaped much spiritually, which was the point.Read the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
