Yet Another Reason I’ll Keep on Bringing and Nursing My Little Ones to/in Church

Because the prophet Joel told me to (Joel 2: 15-16): Blow the trumpet in Zion; sanctify a fast;             call a solemn assembly; gather the people. Sanctify the congregation; assemble the elders;             gather the children, even nursing infants. Let the bridegroom leave his room,             and the bride her chamber.  Don’t miss me gettingRead the whole post >>

Teaching Children Contentment

Here’s a snippet from an Advent-themed column that originally appeared at Faith & Family LIVE! and more recently was published over at Catholic News Agency’s Catholic Womanhood page. “I have a special treat for you,” I said, showing Madeline a bobbing helium balloon. “Oh! Thank you!” She smiled and took the balloon, but then myRead the whole post >>

New Column: Peace Be With Me

An excerpt my latest Inside Catholic column: “I’ll never stop trying to find the quiet — especially during Advent, when we’re supposed to see past the holiday hoopla, the mass commercialism, the sing-song-y, overly synthesized Simply-Having-a-Wonderful-Christmastime kind of vapid lyrics, the chronic case of the “gimmes” that begins to plague children before the Thanksgiving leftoversRead the whole post >>

Helping Women We Love Who Have Eating Disorders

Today I’m tackling question numero uno. Once after writing about my own personal struggles with an eating disorder, I had a mother write this note* to me: “I have a 27-year-old daughter who suffers from depression and an eating disorder. She recently moved far from me, but I remain her closest contact who knows ofRead the whole post >>

If You Could Ask Me Anything, What Would It Be?

So with my newfound sleep rules, my desire to celebrate the season of Advent fully, and a nagging case of writer’s block, I’m finding that this blog is becoming cumbersome. I’m sure my feelings will pass (past experience with myself annoying myself on my blog tells me this much). However, there have been several daysRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
