To My Big Girl

Dear Madeline, I’ve been writing birthday letters to you and your sisters every year, and you’d think these sentimental snippets would get easier as you grew and started doing more interesting stuff than just babbling, toddling about, and excreting, but it’s tough to sum up what you mean to me as you grow older, biggerRead the whole post >>

Believing Through the Hardest Times

This is an old column from Faith & Family LIVE, but it just feels so appropriate right now, and I’m still not finding adequate time to write new stuff. I just read a magazine article about how the people of Haiti are still struggling to rebuild their lives. We were shocked and devastated when theRead the whole post >>

Interruptions and Intentions

Here’s one from the 2009 archives. I need this one right about now because the blasted time change has thwarted my early morning quiet time, and my little larks are popping out of bed way too early. “Try interrupting the meditations of someone who is very attached to her spiritual exercises and you will seeRead the whole post >>

For a Friend

He Leadeth Me by Walter Ciszek, which I read last year per Jen’s recommendation, was one of those books I marked all over with a pencil and highlighter because so much of it spoke to me. Last night I was perusing old quotes filed away in a “faith/religious” notebook in search of words that mightRead the whole post >>

The Single Best Thing I’ve Done Lately to Be a Better Wife and Mom

For the past few weeks I’ve been doing something radical. Almost every night after the girls’ story time, bedtime prayers, and tuck-in time, instead of resting beside them for a few minutes before popping up to conquer the world (one dirty sock at a time) I’ve instead slipped into their warm nest of covers, and I’veRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
