7 Quick Takes: The Natural Disaster, Broken Ankle, Swollen Eye, Among Other Things Edition

~1~ My husband returned from work around 1 a.m. on Thursday, and I was awake (I’ve been struggling with insomnia this week). We tuned into our weather radio, knowing that severe storms would soon be marching through our area. A few minutes into listening, we heard the eerie cry of a tornado siren. We piledRead the whole post >>

3:year-old: AHHHHHEEEEEEOOOOOAHHHHHHH. [Or something like that.] Mom: Rachel, you’re going to have to lower your voice and stop screaming if you want me to understand what you want. 6-year-old: Yeah. We don’t speak scream language. We speak English.

Tea Time

On Friday, the older girls and I took Gaba to the Baron York Tea Room. It was an enchanting and delicious afternoon. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
