A Child’s Prayer

Madeline has taken a new interest in “writing” prayers. She makes up a prayer and asks me to jot down her words as her thoughts meander aloud. Some of what comes out of her mouth is nonsensical; some of it just plain silly. Yet, I’ve been struck by some of the tender things she hasRead the whole post >>

Four Years Ago…

Four years ago I thought I was fully prepared for labor, birth, motherhood, the whole shebang after working at a regional parenting publication, being a star student in my Bradley birthing class, quizzing other moms for parenting wisdom, and reading countless books about baby care and raising kids the right way. But from the momentRead the whole post >>

Watch Your Tone, Mom

Setting: A brisk day in Georgia. The sky is a steely gray. We’re driving along on our way to run some boring errands when we find ourselves stuck behind a big, crawling truck. Preschooler: This truck in really slowing us down. Me: Good observation, Madeline, good observation. I don’t mean to sound facetious. Really IRead the whole post >>

And You Think You’ve Got Problems…

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
